Cold frame greenhouse

What a Cold Frame Greenhouse Is

A cold frame greenhouse is a low, glazed box that sits directly on soil or a hard base, with a clear sloping lid that lifts or slides. There is no foundation, no power and nothing to assemble beyond the frame itself, which is what makes it the most accessible way to start growing under cover.

It works by trapping solar heat during the day and holding it through the night. That single degree or two of difference is enough to start seed weeks before an open bed is ready, and to keep hardy crops going well into autumn.

What It Is Used For

Three jobs, all of which it does better than a full greenhouse.

  • Starting seed early, where the low volume warms quickly on a spring morning.
  • Hardening off, moving plants from indoor warmth to outdoor conditions in stages by opening the lid progressively.
  • Overwintering hardy stock and protecting herbs and salad leaves through cold spells.

Hardening off is the one growers underuse. Plants moved straight from a windowsill to open ground check badly, and a fortnight in a cold frame with the lid opened a little further each day prevents that.

Placement

A cold frame can be moved, which is its other advantage. Position it against a south or west facing wall for the longest hours of sun and the shelter of the masonry behind. It can also sit directly over a bed, on a raised planter, or on paving.

Because it is light and low, wind is less of a threat than with a tall frame, but the lid is the weak point. A gust under an open lid will take it off, so prop it rather than leaving it free.

Daily Ventilation

This is the part that decides whether a cold frame works. A closed frame in full March sun can pass thirty degrees within an hour, which is enough to kill the seedlings it was built to protect.

Open the lid in the morning and close it before evening. Where you cannot be there daily, prop it permanently on a small block, accepting slightly less heat retention in exchange for not cooking anything.

Cold Frame or Something Larger

A cold frame is a starting point and a permanent tool rather than a compromise. Most growers who move up to a small greenhouse keep the frame, because hardening off still needs doing.

If you want to work standing up rather than kneeling, the next step is a walk in frame. If space is the constraint rather than budget, a mini greenhouse or a lean to model against a wall gives more height without much more footprint.
